What Is The Run?
The FIJI Run Across Virginia is a
cross state run culminating in the presentation of the UVa vs. Virginia Tech game ball at
their annual meeting in late November. The running of the game ball has
become one of the largest student run philanthropies at either school and
benefits The V Foundations for cancer research. Participants in the run
are members of the fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI), and come from both the
UVa and Virginia Tech Chapters. Not only are these FIJI brothers the
creators and operators of the run, but they are also the primary fundraisers for
the charity. Last year the combined efforts of both chapters raised over
$30,000 and brought the event total to over $130,000. This years goal is
to raise over $30,000.
The event is accomplished using a relay
race style run. Starting in Blacksburg the brothers from VT will run the
game ball towards Lynchburg. Once they reach Lynchburg, brothers from
UVa will take over and carry the ball the rest of the way to
Charlottesville. The ball is run by one brother at a time, and each brother
runs about a mile before handing off the ball to the next runner.
Participants
are carried on two tour busses that follow the runners along the route.
For safety, police escorts have also been set up along the entire route.
This years buses will be provided by Abbott Bus Lines, based out of
Virginia.
Once in Charlottesville the ball will be run
through town and then taken to the stadium for the check presentation.
In the stadium members of the run will present a check to the representatives
from The V Foundation for all the money raised that year. The check
presentation ceremony will take place either before the game, or during half
time, so be sure to get to the stadium early to show your support.
